Kari Tauring on The Runes: A Deeper Journey

Sons of Norway Lodge Meeting Entertainment! Heritage Lutheran Church – 7pm meeting
My love for the Elder Futhark Runes began in 1989 in a linguistics class at the University of St. Thomas. The late Dr. Luanne Dummer expected that I was familiar with the runes already from an esoteric perspective, given my heritage and interest in the occult subjects. To her shock, I was not!
I asked my grandmother why we didn’t know about runes. It was, after all, our heritage.
“That’s pretty old stuff,” she said. “It’s pre-Christian.”
That hit me like a ton of bricks. It never occurred to me to look under the Lutheran Lefse and Lutefisk of my Norwegian identity. I have been doing it ever since!
Known as the Elder Futhark, the first complete set appears in 300 ACE, 400 years before the Vikings (900 ACE) and 1000 years than the Kensington rune stone. Runes are shapes with sounds, meanings, and stories that illuminate the history, values, and mindset of our pre-Christian ancestors.
