Scandinavian Hjemkomst and Midwest Viking Festival
June 23 @ 10:00 am - June 24 @ 4:00 pm$15
In it’s 40th year, this is one of the most unique Scandinavian festivals in the United States. Visitors can immerse in the early Nordic Iron Age (Viking Era) encampment experiencing blacksmithing, fiber arts, live steel combat, cooking, and wood work – visit the Middle Ages in the replica Hopperstad Stavkirke – then move into the Romantic Era with folk costumes, songs, and dances. Visit current artisans and stop at the Hjemkomst gift shop for the very latest in Scandinavian books, jewelry and music!
Visiting volva, Kari Tauring, (she’s like a Nordic time traveller) will be telling stories from the World Tree and singing from the Eddas and the Kalevala! This year’s country focus is Norway but since Finland is celebrating 100 years as an independent nation, Kari will teach a Finnish folk charm to ward off the trickster elves that abound during Midsommar evenings!
Stop by her tent on Friday and Saturday for rune readings or to see artifacts dating from 15,000 BCE Denmark to a Bronze Age reconstructed string skirt and a full evolution of the rune alphabet from 200 ACE to the Kensington Stone (1360’s). Children can “earn a bead” by placing artifacts correctly on the time line and learning the runes in their own names!
Nordic Nightlife Friday Night – Catch Kari in concert and stay for song circle dances
at the Spirit Room Gallery – 8pm.
Hear her live on Prairie Public Radio Thursday the 22nd.
