The Volva Stav Guild is excited to host this year's Winter Retreat on January 27 and 28, 2018. Registration information is at the bottom of the page. Here is the basic schedule: Saturday 10 am - 7 pm Registration starts at 9am. Welcome Ceremony 10 am. We will provide sandwich making supplies for lunch. Runic poets Kari Tauring and Lynette Reini Grandell ponder February - called Helmikuu (Pearl Moon) in Finland. Their poetry gathers the agitation and pain of cultural constriction, scarcity, and darkness. Their chants pour the balm of healing like the milk of the pearl. According to the Roman calendar, there is no full moon in Helmikuu, only the shadow where the moon should be. Dive into the darkness and build the pearl of light within your heart this February.

Sheep and goats were brought into Norway during the Scandinavian Bronze Age (circa 1500 BCE) and completely changed the culture bringing the arts of spinning, weaving, and fulling into the center of society. These tasks were mostly done by women using drop spindles and warp weighted looms. In Old Norse Mythology the universe is held together by a giant tree. It is called by many names throughout the Icelandic Edda poems: mjötvið (tree of great measure) and yggdrasil (terrible steed) are the first two names that are mentioned in the Voluspa, the first poem in the Eddas.
